Hawaiian Airlines has upped its orders for Airbus jets as it looks to further expand its already growing fleet.

The airline announced Monday it has a memorandum of understanding with Airbus to order 16 new A321neo narrow-body jets, to be delivered between 2017 and 2020, with options to order nine more.

"Everyone at Hawaiian wants us to keep our position as the market leader in service quality, cost efficiency and choice of destinations. Ordering the A321neo will secure this legacy on routes to the U.S. West Coast beyond the middle of this decade," CEO Mark Dunkerley said in a statement.

The A321neo is a new model jet that will seat 190 passengers. Dunkerley said it will be the industry's most fuel-efficient jet, and will be good for corridors that might not have enough traffic for the twin-aisle wide-body Airbus jets Hawaiian is flying now.

List price value of the order could be as much as $2.8 billion but Airbus and Boeing do significant discounting when airlines order a lot of planes at once.

Before Monday's order, Hawaiian already had 19 Airbus jets on order – 13 more A330s to be delivered over the next three years, and six longer-range jets to be delivered after that.

Hawaiian already flies 9 Airbus jets, 16 Boeing 767s and 18 Boeing 717-200s used for interisland flights. Hawaiian plans to phase out the 767s as more Airbus A330 models arrive.
