An 81-year-old Kaneohe man died Saturday after he was hit by a car near the Bay View Golf Course.
The victim has been identified as George Obata.
Honolulu Police said the collision happened at about 6:30 a.m. According to investigators, Obata was crossing Kaneohe Bay Drive about 200 feet west of Mokulele Drive when he was hit by a car driven by a 39-year-old Kailua man. Obata was taken in extremely critical condition to Castle Medical Center, where he later died.
Honolulu Police said it had opened a negligent homicide investigation, but did not arrest the driver. Investigators say the man was not in a crosswalk when he was hit. Speed and alcohol were not believed to be factors in the collision, police said.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday to determine the exact cause of death.
The death is the second traffic fatality of the year on Oahu, compared to one a year ago.
