Suspect in Big Island police officer shootings charged with attempted murder

The 31-year-old man who was arrested on Thursday in connection with the shootings of two police officers in Hilo a day before has been charged with two counts of first-degree attempted murder, according to Big Island Police.

Police also charged 31-year-old Keaka D. Martin of Hilo with second-degree reckless endangering and various gun-related counts. Martin remains in police custody with no bail and currently remains in the Hilo Medical Center in critical condition with a self inflicted gunshot wound.

The two Hilo police officers injured by a gunman remain at the Hilo Medical Center in stable condition and were "in good spirits," according to the brother of one of the officers.
