It's always welcome news when one of Hawaii's best and brightest decides to stay on our shores.
So we are pleased to hear that Hawaiian airlines president and CEO Mark Dunkerley has signed a new three-year contract that will keep him here through 2016.
Mark has accomplished much in the past decade, from pulling the airline from bankruptcy to bringing Hawaiian into the 21st century with a new fleet of airbuses and rapid expansion into new markets, including Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo, Manila, Seoul and New York City.
The airline also has an excellent safety and on-time arrival record.
Most everyone who comes in contact with mark is impressed with his integrity, humility and kindness. He is an excellent boss.
In a 2010 interview with the New York Times, Mark said he learned valuable lessons from one of his first bosses, "the importance of independent thinking, of developing the talents of those around him and of always striving to improve."
We are fortunate to have a leader of Mark's caliber staying with us for another few years. May he remain with us for many more.
