New Year's Eve fire guts Maui home

KAHULUI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A fire destroyed a Kahului home New Year's Eve causing an estimated $152,000 in damage. 

Maui firefighters were dispatched to the 600 square foot 'cottage' on 51 Kono Place in at 9:34 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, they found the cottage fully engulfed with flames.

Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said an adjacent structure was also found with flames and smoke coming off its rooftop.

The cottage and its contents were completely destroyed, damage to the adjacent structure was contained to one section of the home, with damages estimated at $25,000.

Mainaga said residents of the cottage were displaced and left the scene. Their status was unknown at last report.

The adjacent structure was under construction and was not occupied.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
