Martin Earns First Big West Player of the Week Honor

IRVINE, Calif.—(Hawaii Athletics) University of Hawai`i women's basketball forward Kamilah Martinaveraged a double-double over three tournament games to claim her first Big West Women's Basketball Player of the Week accolade.

Martin led the Rainbow Wahine to a 2-1 record in the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Invitational posting 13.7 points and 10.7 rebounds on 50.0 (15 of 30) percent shooting from the floor.  For her efforts, Martin earned a spot on the all-tournament team, her third such honor this season.

The 6-0 junior from Oakland, Calif. began the tournament with 14 points, seven rebounds and two steals in a 52-33 win over LIU Brooklyn. She made 6-of-12 shots in just 24 minutes of action. She then notched her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and a season-high 15 rebounds in a thrilling 65-63 overtime victory against Cincinnati. With the 15 boards, she passed former UH great Kim Everett (747) for fourth all-time in career rebounds with 751.

She followed the Cincinnati game with her second straight double-double performance, corralling another 10 rebounds with a game-high 15 points in a heartbreaking 44-43 loss to Alabama in the tourney's championship game. Martin now has 761 career rebounds and continues to rank second in school history in rebounds per game average (11.0).  Martin was 4-of-8 floor shooting and 7-of-9 efficiency from the line against the Crimson Tide.

Martin has 34 career double-doubles and has led the Rainbow Wahine on the glass in every game this season. Over the last two seasons in the Western Athletic Conference, Martin earned two WAC Player of the Week awards--one as a freshman and one as a sophomore.

This season, Martin leads UH with 15.2 points and 10.1 rebounds through UH's 11 games. She also leads UH with 21 assists, 12 steals and has gone to the free throw line a team-high 71 times, making 46 of them.

The Rainbow Wahine open their Big West Conference season on the road at Cal State Fullerton on Jan. 3 and then head to UC Riverside on Jan. 5.
