HONOLULU - In what was supposed to be an offensive showdown, it was a defensive player making all the difference in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl. SMU defensive end Margus Hunt had two sacks, two forced fumbles and a safety as June Jones and the Mustangs routed Fresno State 43-10.
Hunt, a 6'8" 280lb senior from Estonia, harassed Derek Carr all day, as SMU returned two interceptions for touchdowns. SMU had seven sacks in the game.
Offensively, SMU outrushed the Bulldogs 169 to -24. Quarterback Garrett Gilbert led the way with 18 rushes for 98 yards and a touchdown. He threw for 212 yards, going 14/28 with a passing touchdown and two interceptions.
The Mustangs finished the season at 7-6, while Fresno Stated ended the year at 9-4.
