KALIHI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
Teenager Christian Cachola was injured during a desperate rescue attempt at a house fire in Kalihi on Saturday afternoon, according to an Emergency Medical Services spokesperson. According to reports, the fire was reported to be at 2849 Iluna Place at approximately 3:30 p.m..
The 13-year-old boy was reportedly taken to an area hospital in serious condition after suffering burn wounds.
Christian's mother, Rose Cachola, says the boy went back into the burning home yesterday to try to save his dog "Emma." Their family adopted her just a week ago before finding out she had a virus. They brought her home from the vet the same day flames ripped through their home.
Rose Cachola says, "He did run out of the house to get some air and neighbors told me that he ran back into the house to grab the puppy and that's how he got burned."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation but Cachola thinks the flames were sparked when her son plugged in their Christmas tree lights to show his dog.
