BATON ROUGE – LSU safety Eric Reid picked up his fifth first team All-America honor for the 2012 season on Friday as the junior was named to the 69th Football Writers Association of America All-America Team, the organization announced.
Reid had previously earned first team All-America honors for his play in 2012 from the American Football Coaches Association, ESPN.com, Scout.com and AT&T ESPN. Reid was one of 11 players from the Southeastern Conference to be named to the 26-play FWAA All-America Team.
Reid becomes the 18th first-team All-America selection under head coach Les Miles. He's also the sixth first-team All-America defensive back for LSU since 2005 joining LaRon Landry (2006), Craig Steltz (2007), Patrick Peterson (2010), Morris Claiborne (2011) and Tyrann Mathieu (2011).
In 2012, Reid helped lead the Tigers to a 10-2 overall mark and a No. 8 national ranking heading into the Dec. 31 Chick-fil-A Bowl against 14th-ranked Clemson. LSU, which spent the entire season ranked in the top 10, had three wins over ranked opponents, including a 23-21 victory over No. 3 South Carolina and a 24-19 win over No. 19 Texas A&M.
Reid, who was also a first team All-SEC selection, ranked third on the team with 81 tackles to go along with a pair of interceptions and six pass breakups.
As a team, LSU ranked No. 8 in the nation in total defense, allowing just 296.2 yards per game, and the Tigers were second in the SEC and No. 8 in the nation in interceptions with 18.
The FWAA All-America Team, the second-longest continuously-published team in major college football, was announced on SiriusXM Radio's College Sports Nation this morning. Since 1944, the FWAA has named an All-America team, and this season an extra returner was added to increase the number of players on the team to 26.
