New Hawaii athletics director to make $293,000

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The University of Hawaii on Friday released the salary for newly appointed Athletic Director Ben Jay.

UH says Jay has accepted an offer of $293,000 annual salary with performance-based bonuses.

UH President M.R.C.  Greenwood is the approving authority for Mr. Jay's appointment.  Hawai'i state law requires the university to give public notice of proposed salaries for executive and managerial appointments in an open meeting. The next scheduled Board of Regents meeting is January 24, 2013. Presidential action will follow the public posting.

For context, the 2011-2012 Division 1A Athletics Directors' Association's Annual Compensation Survey shows the average salary for Athletic Directors nationwide is $354,442.

The average AD salary in the Big 10 conference (Mr. Jay's current conference) is $521,000 and in the Mountain West, $264,000.
