Power Outage, Teachers Protest, Cyclone Evan

Here's what's happening now on this Thursday morning.

POWER OUTAGE

We're tracking a power outage in the Aiea/Salt Lake area. Lights are reportedly out at the Toys 'R Us store and affecting Camp Smith. We're awaiting word back from HECO on the source of the problem, number of customers affected and timeline for service to be restored.

TEACHERS PROTEST

For the fourth time in a month, teachers and students will gather before and after school for a "work to the rule" protest. Some 97 schools are taking part in the first picket since the HSTA rejected the latest contract offer from the State.

CYCLONE EVAN SLAMS AMERICAN SAMOA

New images are coming into our newsroom this morning showing widespread flooding and damage from Cyclone Evan in American Samoa. Hawaiian Airlines is assessing conditions before making the call on its scheduled afternoon departure today for American Samoa. You can see a slideshow of pictures at HawaiiNewsNow.com.

HIGH SURF ADVISORY

High surf is churning on the east facing shores of Oahu, Kauai, Maui, Molokai and the Big Island. Meteorologist Jennifer Robbins will let us know when it will peak on Sunrise.
