Mislabeled seafood a widespread problem, study finds

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A study released by the conservation group Oceana found what they call a shocking amount of seafood mislabeling in New York City, according to CNN. For example, if you order red snapper it may not be what you get.

Researchers found that sushi restaurants were the worst offenders, CNN reports. All 16 of the restaurants they checked sold mislabeled fish.

At grocery stores, 58 percent were caught selling mislabeled fish, but the national chains were much more reliable than small, independent grocers.

Earlier research conducted in Boston, Los Angeles and Miami came up with similar findings.

The Oceana report calls it a bait and switch that rips off consumers and is asking Congress to take action.
