Aiea residents weigh in on proposed project at site of old Kam Drive-In

The site of the old Kamehameha Drive-In is currently an empty lot, but that could soon change.  

Residents weighed in Monday night on a proposed multi-million dollar community. If the $766 million project goes through, construction won't begin until 2014, but the proposed plans have already created a debate within the Aiea community.

The 14-acre project consists of five residential towers, multiple shops, restaurants and a grocery store. Representatives from developer, Robertson Properties Group, were at the meeting to discuss a move that would allow for mixed-use business and residential zoning.

Many are worried about the traffic headache the project will create.

"I'm afraid that because this is a target for a lot of drivers, there will be a backup of traffic and those drivers cannot get to parking within the project," Aiea resident Robert Burdick said. "I saw tonight they (Robertson Properties Group) fully haven't planned for that."

Chris Prendergast has lived in Pearl City for nearly two decades and is also concerned about increased traffic.  However, he thinks the project is perfect for the growing community.

"There's an evolving generation right now," Prendergast said. "A lot of elderly people live in my community in Palisades and also, you can tell by the homes, they are built in the 50s and 60s. This would be an opportunity to add newer construction to the area."

Robertson Properties Group also unveiled an animated glimpse of what the project would look like. Some residents were unhappy at what could soon be in their backyard.

"There were no people in that picture," Burdick said.  "There were none of the 1,500 residents, none of the teenagers hanging out. Cars were parked in empty parking places. There aren't going to be empty parking places in this place."

Despite mixed reactions for the project, Robertson says it plans to constantly seek input.

"We finished the EIS and we still have the zone change to go," said John Manavian, executive vice president of real estate development, Robertson Properties Group. "We've kept the community involved all the way through that and we try to be as transparent as we can on every step of the way."
