HANALEI, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

One of the most famous landmarks along Kauai's North Shore is receiving a facelift.

A project to remove the aging canopy at the end of Hanalei Pier and replace it with a new one began on Monday, when crews started breaking down the existing structure.

The Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay begain raising money to replace the pier after it became a safety hazard, according to Bob Capwell, the club's former president. Current safety problems plagung the pier include rotting wood, holes in the roof, and missing stainless steel supports.

More than $170,000 has been raised to fund the rebuilding of the canopy.

The pier has been present, in some form or another, since around 1879, when it was made entirely out of wood. Capwell says he estimates the pier was rebuilt using concrete sometime in the 1940s, and that the pier's canopy, as it was until Monday, had been there since the early 1990s.

Capwell says Wells Custom Homes, which won the contract to remove the canopy, hopes to have the that portion of the restoration done by the end of December. The rebuilding of the new canopy will likely be finished by April 2013.
