A Waipahu woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition after police say her husband attacked her with a hammer.

Honolulu police say the incident happened late Sunday night. Police say the 23-year-old woman was taken to the hospital after being struck in the head numerous times with the hammer.

Police said her husband fled the scene and jumped from an overpass. He has been identified as 40-year-old Anthony Ka'ai of Waipahu.

Clarissa Ka'ai has been upgraded to fair condition.
