SEATTLE – BJ Penn told Rory MacDonald that he better back up his talk in the cage.
In a lopsided bout, the 23-year old Canadian brutalized 'The Prodigy' for three rounds before winning a unanimous decision Saturday night.
Penn was fighting for the first time in 13 months, and throughout the fight it looked that way. He was slower to strike, slower to react, and couldn't overcome MacDonald's advantages in height, reach, speed and quickness.
The damage started in the first round. With under a minute left, MacDonald staggered Penn with a short left elbow that wobbled the former lightweight and welterweight champ.
In the second round, Macdonald worked the body, gutting Penn with a series of strikes. A left hook had BJ doubled over, but to his credit, the Hilo boy never went down.
Penn survived the round, and managed to stay away from significant damage in the third.
With the loss, Penn is now 16-9-2. Although he had said prior to the fight that he wants to continue on with his career, his record indicates it may be time for a permanent retirement. Penn is 1-4-1 in his last six fights, dating back to 2010.
