LEXINGTON,
Ky. – (Hawaii Athletics) University of Hawai‘i outside hitter Emily Hartong and setter Mita
Uiato were selected to the 2012 AVCA All-West Region team, with Dave Shoji
named Coach of the Year. The announcement was made Tuesday by the American
Volleyball Coaches Association. Hartong and Uiato are now eligible for
All-America honors which will be announced Dec. 12.
Hartong,
who moved to the outside after two years in the middle, garnered her second
all-region selection after being named the Big West Conference's Player of the
Year. She was also named the AVCA National Player of the Week this past
October, Hawai‘i's first since Jamie Houston in 2006. Uiato earns her first
all-region selection after being named First Team All-Big West. She finished
the Big West season ranked second in assists (10.26).
Shoji
was named region coach of the year for the 10th time. Earlier
this season he earned his 1,100th career win, and is four away
from becoming the winningest coach in NCAA history. He was also selected
Co-Coach of the Year in the Big West this season.
The
‘Bows went 27-3 this season and won the Big West with an 18-0 conference
record, the program's sixth Big West title and 18th straight (WAC and Big West)
overall. They concluded the season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament,
falling to Washington in Seattle on Dec. 1.
