(HawaiiNewsNow)- The Waikiki Friendly Neighbors program, an outreach program of Waikiki Health Center, seeks to assist kapuna in need by providing basic assistance and companionship with support from volunteers. The individualized services of the program help seniors who are in need continue leading independent, full-filled lives in their own homes and volunteer visits help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation and provide reassurance of safety and well being to them.
While the program is always seeking volunteers to join, there is always a high demand for services especially as the holiday season approaches. To assist with filling this need, a large-scale volunteer training session will be held on Wednesday, December 5, at Paki Hale for any interested volunteers. People are encouraged to volunteer and help these seniors in need.
A volunteer's role consists primarily of providing companionship, running errands and some light housework - engaging these seniors in conversation, entertainment, recreation, reading or writing letters, puzzles, playing cards, shopping for groceries, providing encouragement, assisting to medical appointments, laundry and other light household chores, meal preparation, seasonal greeting and birthday cards - just to name a few. Since each senior has a unique situation and the services are tailored to meet their needs.
"Volunteering with Friendly Neighbors is a great way to support our kupuna, give back to the community, or gain experience outside the classroom," explains Executive Director Sheila Beckham. "The support can also be beneficial for seniors' families." Families and friends who are caregivers benefit from the program's respite care. A volunteer's assistance enables caregivers to take a break, promoting health for everyone.
