Raw sewage spill closes Kapalama Canal

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Officials from the Department of Health closed the Kapalama Stream on Friday after it was discovered that a broken sewer line discharged waste into a storm drain that empties into the canal.

According the Dept. of Health, the broken sewer line was discovered on Kokea Street after a complaint launched an investigation. Crews investigated the area and determined the line belonged to the Hawaii Housing Authority.

The HHA has contacted a private contractor and will be repairing the line.

Officials say the discharge has been stabilized, but warning signs at the canal have been posted and the public has been advised to stay out of the canal until repairs are finished.
