Man questioned in death at Maui homeless camp

KAHULUI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Maui police say they have questioned and released a man who was wanted in connection with the death of a homeless man.

Police say Charleston Koko, 27, arrived at the Wailuku Police Station 8:45 a.m. Friday for questioning. He was not placed under arrest.

Police opened a Manslaughter investigation after a man was found dead inside a tent at a homeless encampment in Wailuku.

Police were called to the homeless camp around 2:25 a.m. Thursday after they received a report of a fight between four men.

When police arrived on scene, they found a 52-year-old man unresponsive within his tent. The victim was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Police were searching for Koko whom they believed was involved in the fight.

The encampment at the end of Kaae Road is known as the "Wailuku River Mouth."
