Stowaway frog jumps out of Christmas tree and into living room on Kauai

LIHUE, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A couple living on Kauai received a green surprise on Tuesday, and it wasn't the Christmas tree they brought home from Walmart.

Instead, a Pacific chorus frog native to the Pacific Northwest that had been living in the tree jumped from out of their tree and into the living room.

The couple, who had never seen that type of frog before, captured it and called the Kauai Invasive Species Committee, which notified the Department of Agriculture in Honolulu.

"We want the public to be on the lookout for these types of creatures," said Keren Gundersen, KISC Project Manager. "HDOA is doing everything humanly possible to inspect these trees, but it is a huge task and things are bound to slip through."

The frog, along with other pests that are being found in Christmas tree shipments, is not native to the Hawaiian islands and could pose a dangerous threat to the ecosystem.

Gundersen says the KISC is encouraging people to buy Christmas trees from local vendors to avoid the importation of unwanted species.
