Teen victim in Ewa Beach car crash wasn't drinking

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The teenage girl who was killed during a multi-vehicle crash in Ewa Beach last Tuesday did not have alcohol in her system, according to a report by the Honolulu Medical Examiner.

Kawehi Adkins-Kupuka'a was a passenger in the GMC Envoy that crashed into two other cars before slamming into a utility pole on Kaimalie Street at around 1:30 p.m.

Police say they believe the driver of the SUV, 16-year-old Brandon Harris, was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

At last check, Harris was still hospitalized in critical condition.

The day after the crash, Adkins-Kupuka'a's boyfriend Johnoven Lagon, who was a passenger in the backseat of the Envoy, told reporters that he had been concerned about getting into the car because he knew Harris had been consuming alcohol.

"I had like, second thoughts about jumping into the car and stuff," said Lagon.

He said at that time that neither he nor Kawehi had been drinking before the crash.
