Salvage company says boat removal was tricky

The operator of a salvage company that removed a boat stuck for days on corals in Oahu's Kaneohe Bay says lifting the boat was a tricky process.

Michael Parker with Parker Marine says what should have taken one day took four days so as not to cause any more damage to corals being crushed by the 40-foot sampan. He says refloating the boat required placing anchors 200 to 250 feet away from the vessel where there were no corals. Ropes then had to be floated to keep them off the corals. Six pumps capable of pumping 1,400 gallons of water a minute were used to refloat the vessel, which was removed Saturday.

Parker says it crushed the corals underneath it and left a 50-foot long gash.
