HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Legacy of Life Hawai`i (LLH) has launched a campaign to encourage organ donation at Honolulu City and County Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) sites across the state.

The campaign targets both new and renewing licensed drivers, and features rotating posters of Hawaii's movers and shakers prominently displayed at Oahu DMV locations in Wahiawa, Dillingham, Kapolei and Koolau. Featured local celebrities and community leaders, include:

  • Bishop Larry Silva, Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu
  • KHON2 News Anchor Joe Moore
  • Hawaii News Now Anchors - Shawn Ching and Stephanie Lum
  • KSSK Radio - Michael W. Perry and Larry Price
  • Lt. Governor Brian Schatz
  • Reigning Miss Hawaii 2012, Skyler Kamaka
  • Vocalist/Musician, Molokai Native - Raiatea Helm
  • UH Men's Basketball Coach Gib Arnold
  • UH Women's Volleyball Coach Dave Shoji

Through community outreach and education, Legacy of Life Hawai'i is working to significantly increase the number of registered organ donors throughout the state. Beginning in 2013, the DMV will begin administering state IDs. Residents over the age of 18 can register as organ donors when they apply for a state ID or a driver's license at the DMV.

LLH is working to expand this campaign to DMVs on the neighbor islands. Working collaboratively with the DMV, LLH has set up kiosks at select DMV sites across Oahu (Dillingham, Wahiawa, Kapolei and Koolau) to encourage new and renewing driver's license and state ID applicants to be "lifesavers" by checking YES to organ donation on their application form.

Walking into the DMV, applicants are greeted by posters of local celebrities and community leaders encouraging organ donation. Onsite LLH volunteers and DMV Program Manager Lacene Terri greet applicants with LLH-branded Gummy Lifesavers and information about organ donation. LLH is also hosting "Lunch and Learn" workshops for DMV staff to educate them on the importance of organ donation and the need to remind applicants to register as organ donors.
