A water main break in Waianae has forced officials to close three schools, a public library and a satellite city hall.
The Board of Water Supply (BWS) says the 16-inch water main break is at 85-654 Farrington Highway near the Waianae Fire Station. The break occurred around 4 a.m. Tuesday morning.
BWS crews have replaced the broken main and restored water service, at low pressures, to all affected customers. Crews will be working through the afternoon to restore water service to its normal capacity and to repair the roadway.
Both mauka lanes on Farrington Highway between Ala Hema Street and Kaulawaha Road remain closed. A contraflow lane is in place to allow for traffic in each direction. These road closures will remain for the duration of the repair, which is expected to continue into the afternoon.
Waianae Satellite City Hall is also closed because of the break.
The break closed three schools in the area, Kamehameha Schools' Pu`u Kâhea Preschool, Waianae Intermediate, and Kamaile Academy because they do not have water.
Kamehameha Schools' Pu`u Kâhea Preschool will be closed again on Nov. 21. Parents and caregivers of all students have been notified.
