WAIANAE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The reward to find the person who fatally shot a dog in Waianae has doubled.

The mainland animal rights group "In Defense of Animals" added $2,000 to an existing reward in the case of "Champ".

Police say someone opened fire on the terrier mix Monday morning from nearly point blank range.

A bullet lodged in Champ's spine; leaving veterinarians no choice but to put him down.

"It's horrific anybody that would take it upon themselves to go out and shoot any animal, but especially a dog, a dog wearing a dog collar is somebody that I think is a clear danger to society and I think that person needs to be caught," said Eric Phelps of IDA.

If you have any information about this crime, you are asked to call the Hawaiian Humane Society or Honolulu police.

The reward now stands at $4,000.
