Raw sewage spills from Manoa sewer

MANOA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Department of Environmental Services (ENV) personnel responded Tuesday morning to a sewer overflow in Manoa.

The incident occurred at 8:32 a.m. at 1812 Hunnewell Street.

Workers say a 6-inch terra cotta pipe broke, causing an estimated 1,275 gallons of untreated wastewater to flow into a storm drain which leads to the Ala Wai Canal.

Crews were able to utilize Vactor trucks and recover 3,500 gallons and discharge it downstream back into the system for proper treatment, but officials have posted signs advising the public to stay out of the Ala Wai Canal until further notice.

A portion of Hunnewell Street is closed between Vancouver Drive  and Seaview Avenue to allow a construction crew to repair the pipe.

ENV has notified the state Department of Health and water sampling is underway.
