Abandoned house fire injures 'squatters'

A fire engulfed part of an abandoned home on Pupukea Road early Monday morning on Oahu's North Shore.

The fire started out just after 1 a.m. and took firefighters about an hour to extinguish.

The home is right at the corner of Pupukea Road and Kamehameha Highway near the Foodland at Shark's Cove.

Officials say two people inside, who are believed to be homeless, were treated for minor injuries at Wahiawa General Hospital.

A 30-year-old woman had burns to her foot and a 44-year-old man suffered from smoke inhalation.

The woman told firefighters she had been using a candle prior to going to sleep, but thought she had put it out.

Area residents say the property has been boarded up for some time.

Damages are estimated $120,000, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
