Residents return home after overnight Kalaeloa barricade

KALAELOA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

An overnight barricade situation near Bougainville Avenue in Kalaeloa ended quietly when a male suspect was taken into custody by the Honolulu Police Department's SWAT team at just before 7:15 a.m. on Sunday.

The incident apparently began with an altercation at around 11:30 p.m. on Satuday night, then escalated when the man barricaded himself.

Several families were evacuated from residences near where the barricade was taking place, according to the American Red Cross, which provided food and drinks to those evacuated while they waited to return home. 27 adults and 10 children were displaced during the incident.

Sources at the scene during the standoff said that the man kept pit bulls on the premises and may also have been in possession of a .45 caliber handgun.

Police did not find any weapons at the scene.

The suspect, an adult male, has been charged with abuse of a family member and promotion of a detrimental drug.
