HONOLULU – (Hawaii Athletics) In a non-conference matchup between intraisland opponents, the No. 7 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team swept BYU-Hawai'i, 25-16, 25-15, 25-17, on Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. Jane Croson had a match-high 13 kills and seven digs for the 'Bows who improve to 22-2 on the season.
The 'Bows recorded a season-high 12 aces in what was a competitive match despite the scoreline. Lauren Hagemeyer led BYUH (20-3) with 10 kills and Shih Ting Chen and Melanie Manutai each shared match-high honors with 12 digs.
The 'Bows opened the match by scoring eight of the first nine points. The Seasiders stemmed the tide on kills by Shih Ting Chen and Ying Chun Chen (8 digs), but Emily Hartong (9 kills) buried three straight kills to push the lead to 15-6. BYUH went on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 20-14, but a kill and a block assist by Tai Manu-Olevaopaced Hawai'i to the win.
Set two saw UH open up another big lead but BYUH would hang around this time. After falling behind by seven points, the Seasiders rallied to cut the UH lead to just 14-12 on a Hagemeyer kill. UH, however, surrendered just three more points in the set and cruised to a two-set lead.
Set three proved to be the toughest of the match for Hawai'i as BYUH led by as much as six points midway through the set. The 'Bows would rally to tie the score at 12-12 on kills by Croson and aces by Ashley Kastl. The score would prove to be lopsided though, as UH closed the set on an 8-1 run to win going away.
The Rainbow Wahine resume conference play next week when they play at Pacific (Nov. 16) and UC Davis (Nov. 17) for their final Big West road matches of the season.
