(HawaiiNewsNow) - Chris and Krissy Kalili are doing a little renovating. Redoing the front yard, throwing down new cement tiles, the thing is, it's not their house.
The Kalilis are part of the Kapuna Program established here at St. Rita's church in Nanakuli. It was started by John Minard after he threw out his back. Rather than lie in bed, John went out and recruited some muscle, the people at Rita's. He got about 52 parishoners to volunteer.
What they do is provide manpower for elderly in the Nanakuli area. They take on any project. They painted one woman's entire home, for another they redid the porch and even at another home, did yard work.
Not everyone has time to help out, so those who can't, donate cash. In fact, John and his friends have about $2,000 saved up for future projects.
John himself is used to a life of service, he's a Vietnam veteran. But he doesn't like to talk about himself, he does this for the people.
