Ocean Safety officials said a man in his mid-40s was taken to the hospital in critical condition after lifeguards pulled him from the water at Sandy Beach.
The incident happened at approximately 4 p.m.
A snorkeler in the area reportedly noticed the surfer in trouble and alerted lifeguards, who performed CPR on the man after using a paddleboard to pull him from the water. Paramedics took over treatment once they arrived at the scene, then transported the man to the hospital.
A high surf advisory remains in effect for north and east-facing shores of Oahu until 6 p.m. Monday.
