Maui beaches closed after shark bites diver in waters off Waiehu

WAIEHU, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A 30-year-old man participating in a diving tournament in waters near the Waiehu Golf Course on Maui was bit on the leg by a shark Sunday morning, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Wailuku firefighters responded to the Waiehu Golf Course at just after 8:20 a.m. to a reports of a diver having been bit by a shark. Officials say Mark Riglos, of Kahului, suffered severe lacerations to his right ankle that did not appear to be life-threatening.

Riglos says he and a friend had been in the water for about an hour as the participated in the Roi Round-Up Diving Tournament when he felt someething tug at his leg. He then turned to see what he estimated was a 15-foot Tiger Shark.

As the shark circled back around, Riglos used his speargun to keep it away. His friend used a tag-line as a tourniquet, then helped Riglos swim the 500 yards to shore.

DLNR officials have closed Waiehu Beach Park from Round Table in Waihee to the Iao River mouth near Paukukalo Village as Ocean Safety personnel notify surfers and paddle boarders to get out of the water.

The beach will likely stay closed for the rest of the day, according to DLNR.
