Suspect arrested after tsunami night burglaries

HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Big Island police have arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with several break-ins that happened during the tsunami evacuation this past Saturday night.

The burglaries occurred in the Keaukaha area of Hilo, Kalani Ahuna of Keaukaha, was arrested on Thursday at about 4:30 p.m.

He was arrested for burglary of a dwelling during a Civil Defense emergency which is a Class A felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Ahuna is being held pending further investigation.

Police ask that anyone with information about these burglaries (or anyone who didn't evacuate and saw suspicious persons in the area) to call Sergeant James Correa at 961-2289 or the Police Department's non-emergency line at 935-3311.
