One critically injured after rollover crash on Maui

PAIA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Maui police say a 20-year-old man suffered critical life threatening injuries in a car crash in Paia.

Police say the crash happened on Baldwin Avenue around 9:05 p.m. Wednesday.

According to police, a Pontiac Sunfire was heading west on Baldwin Avenue when veered off the road onto the shoulder. The vehicle then swerved back across the roadway onto the eastbound shoulder where it collided into a rock barrier.

Police say the car then went down an embankment into Rainbow Park, overturned and slammed into two trees.

The 20-year-old man who is in critical condition was sitting in the rear-middle seat of the car and was not wearing a seatbelt. He was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center.

The front seat passenger, a 20-year-old woman, was taken to Maui Memorial Medical center and then was flown to Oahu for further treatment. The driver, a 20-year-old woman, was taken to Maui Memorial where she was treated and released.

Police say the driver and passenger were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Police suspect alcohol and speed contributed to the Halloween night crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
