HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -
A Big Island mixed martial arts fighter was sentenced Thursday in connection with a deadly beating in Hilo.
Waylen Carenio received a 12-year prison sentence for manslaughter and intimidating a witness. In December 2011, the 21-year-old got into a fight with 44-year-old Roy Williams outside a Hilo sports bar.
Williams struck his head on the pavement and died the next day.
"I wish that I could have avoided the whole situation. I wish that I never went out in the first place and most of all I wish that I could go back and fix it all, but I can't," said Carenio.
Carenio must also pay restitution to Williams' family.
