Honolulu lifeguard given international lifesaving award

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A longtime City and County of Honolulu lifeguard was given the International Lifesaving Rescue Medal of Valour during a ceremony in Minneapolis, Minnesota today.

Brian Higa, a lifeguard of about twenty years, became just the third person to win the award.

The award was given to Higa for his actions during an incident an Yokohama Bay in February of 2011. A 19-year-old Canadian man had been washed off the rocks and into the Moi Hole at Yokohama Bay, and Higa jumped off of a 25-foot cliff in order to save the man.

Using fins and a rescue tube, Higa swam more than 300 yards to bring the visitor to shore.
