Repairs on Aiea pedestrian overpass to begin Nov. 1

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Repairs on the pedestrian overpass near Aiea Elemetary School that was knocked down when an oversized load slammed into it will begin on November 1 and should only take about a week, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The DOT says they will be able to re-use the old walkway instead of building an entirely new one, and that they will put it back up with a new hand railing.

Witnesses of the crash said a truck from Tibbitts Trucking was towing a flatbed trailer with a forklift on top on October 16 when the forklift hit the walkway above. The pedestrian overpass had a clearance of 15 feet, 6 inches.

The Department of Transportation will charge Tibbitts for the repairs, but officials say they do not yet have an estimate on the cost.
