KAHIKINUI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -
A Maui man who was reported
missing by his girlfriend on Tuesday has been found dead in the waters offshore
near Kahikinui, according to police.
Dennis Roberts, 70, of
Kihei, was reportedly last seen at the Matson Shipping Company in Kahului
picking up a 2012 Jeep Wrangler belonging to him that had just arrived from
Seattle.
Roberts told his girlfriend
that he was planning on taking a drive around the island, but failed to return
home that night. The girlfriend told authorities that Roberts had been acting
strange and that she was concerned that he had appeared to be depressed over
the past few days.
On Wednesday, Roberts'
vehicle was discovered near mile marker 27.5 on Piilani Highway near Kahikinui.
Fire and rescue crews were called in to conduct an aerial search of the area
where Roberts was found, including areas of high cliffs and rocky shorelines.
A body that appeared to
have severe head injuries was recovered nearly 300 yards offshore at approximately
1:30 p.m., and was positively identified as Roberts.
An autopsy has been
scheduled for tomorrow.
