IRVINE, California (HawaiiNewsNow) - The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team was picked to finish
in sixth place and Kamilah Martin was tabbed Preseason
All-Conference in the Big West's preseason polls voted on by the media.
Under first year head coach Laura Beeman, the Rainbow Wahine
received 81 points—just one point ahead of UC Davis in seventh place. The 'Bows
are coming off an 11-19 overall record and a 6-8 mark that tied them for fourth
in their final season in the Western Athletic Conference. Cal State
Northridge—who finished in second last season—earned six first place votes to
nab the top spot in the media poll while Pacific came in right behind the
Matadors with five first place votes and 159 total points.
Martin (formerly Jackson), was the only junior to be voted to the six-member
preseason team. Last season as a sophomore, Martin earned all-WAC second team
honors after leading UH for the second straight season in points (13.2) and
rebounds (10.6) per game with career highs in assists (56) and blocks (23). In
her career, she has averaged 12.6 points and 11.2 boards per game.
The Rainbow Wahine begin the Beeman era with an exhibition game this Friday,
Oct. 26 against UH Hilo at 7:00 p.m. in the Stan Sheriff Center.
