HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Legendary surfboard shaper Donald Takayama has died.
The Hawaii native died of a heart attack Monday. Takayama was born in Waikiki and raised in Honolulu. As a young surfer he finished runner-up in the U.S. surfboard championships in '66 and '67.
He also dabbled in acting appearing in "Surf Crazy" in 1959, "Barefoot Adventure" in 1960 and most notably in the 1999 film, "The Seedling."
He eventually started his own surfboard label, "Hawaiian Pro Designs".
Surfer Magazine named him one of the "25 Surfers Who Changed the Sport." Takayama is also an inductee of the International Surfing Hall of Fame.
Takayama was 68-years-old.
