HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - Melvin "Mynah Bird" Medeiros was the iconic voice of Big Island radio for more than 50 years.
He died Thursday in California of a pulmonary illness.
Medeiros' "talk story" style of mixing news and commentary made him a fixture on KHBC, KPUA & KIPA.
Medeiros spent much of his career as the morning drive personality at KPUA.
His career took a controversial turn in 1990 when he pleaded no contest to attempted kidnapping of a 14-year-old boy. He outraged many by returning to the airwaves after serving only one month of a one-year sentence.
Funeral arrangements are pending. Medeiros was 72.
