Intruder climbs over Honolulu Zoo fence

WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - An unwanted visitor at the Honolulu Zoo caused quite a commotion on Saturday night. The facility closes at 4:30 p.m. daily, but a man climbed over the fence at the main entrance nearly two hours later. He ran inside, then came back to the entrance area and chatted with an eyewitness shooting home video. The suspect took off again later when authorities arrived.

An employee opened the gate from the inside, allowing two HPD officers in. According to authorities, zoo security caught the man and turned him over to police.

"I yelled at the guy to stop and he took off into the zoo to the right, and I thought oh my gosh this guy is in the zoo. He's completely out of his mind so that was pretty scary for me. I was actually pretty upset," said an eyewitness who did not want to be identified.

Police said the man was highly intoxicated and disoriented. Officers took him to the Queen's Medical Center for observation.
