HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Signs warning the public to stay out of the water at Hickam Beach were posted on Friday after 9,000 gallons of wastewater were spilled near a storm drain that leads to the beach, according to the state Department of Health.

The spill, which officials say is not expected to reach harbor waters, occurred on Gardner Avenue at Joint Base Pearl Habor-Hickam. The incident has been attributed to an equipment failure.

Warning signs will continue to remain posted as a precaution.
