Red Cross Hero: Laurine Carvalho

(HawaiiNewsNow) - Laurine Carvalho has been an active American Red Cross volunteer since 2003 and volunteering in both disaster services and health and safety services. She coordinates, prepares and implements the Red Cross response plan to all threats and assists in training and responding to disasters in Hawaii County and on Kauai. Laurine has also been deployed to help with national disaster relief efforts in Texas, Tennessee, Georgia and American Samoa.

Laurine also instructs lifeguards and first aid classes. She's also a wife and mother and has a full time job. It's no surprise that Laurine Carvalho is the American Red Cross of Hawaii's East Hawaii Volunteer of the Year.

You get to meet a lot of people and you see all the devastation. So my heart goes out to them. So by us going there by the American Red Cross we just do whatever we can help them. But you know, we bring back those learnings and help make our community or our islands more efficient or be more proactive in case something happens.
