LAIE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will conduct controlled underwater explosions of unexploded ordnance on Thursday that will close Mâlaekahana State Recreation Area.

Officials will control ocean access at La'ie Bay in addition to the planned closure at Mâlaekahana State Recreation Area. The operation will take place between daybreak and approximately 4 p.m.

The unexploded ordnance was discovered during an investigation conducted by the Corps on formerly used defense sites on four small islands located between the communities of Lâ‘ie and Kahuku on the north shore of O‘ahu. They are Moku‘auia, also known as Goat Island, Kîhewamoku, Mokuâlai, and Pulemoku Rock.

All four islands are uninhabited and lie in a two-mile stretch, less than a mile off the coast.
