Local youth honored at State Capitol celebration

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Families from around Hawaii descended upon the State Capitol on Sunday for a fun-filled celebration at the 19th Annual Children and Youth Day.

Children enjoyed more than 300 interactive and educational activities, including a BrushBots workshop, guided tours of ‘Iolani Palace, and dozens of carnival-style rides and games. The festivities were spread out across the Capitol and a number of surrounding areas, including the ‘Iolani Palace ground, the King Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center, and The Frank F. Fasi Civic Center.

Event organizers say the event helps keep children and youth across the state excited about learning and discovering their talents.

"This event is a great opportunity for families to be together, enjoy each other's company, and learn together about the community resources available for the healthy development of our children and youth," said Senator Suzanne Chun Oakland. "This event creates wonderful memories for our children and families that will last a lifetime."

Among the other activities were demonstrations by the Honolulu police and fire departments, as well as football, tennis and basketball clinics.
