HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 77-year-old man who was spear fishing near Coconut Island in Hilo died on Friday after being found unresponsive in the water.
Big Island police officers responded to Coconut Island after receiving reports of a spear fisherman in distress. Upon arrival, the officers and Hawaii Fire Department rescue personnel discovered that the man had already been removed from the ocean and was unresponsive.
The man was transported to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Police have ordered an autopsy to determine his exact cause of death. The man's name has not yet been released.
