HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - It is looking like this year's Honolulu Marathon will be one of the largest in four decades.
Organizers say registrations are nearly 4,000 ahead of last year's final total. With registration continuing until Dec. 8, the current total is already at 26,302. Organizers say the number of runners from Japan is already more than 600 ahead of last year's total.
"We could wind up with one of the largest fields ever. The race has reached 30,000 six times. Five of those years were in the 1990s and the last one was 2002," said marathon spokesman Pat Bigold.
"That would put us in the mega-marathon category with larger races like the New York City Marathon and London Marathon," said Bigold.
Hawaii entries are also up, 11,212 have registered. Last year there were 8,201 local entries.
According to an HPU study, the marathon has pumped more than $100 million into the Hawaii economy each of the last seven years.
