PROVO, Utah (AP) - Two Hawaii defensive tackles have been taken to the hospital after being injured in apparent helmet-to-helmet collisions on back-to-back series during the first quarter against Brigham Young on Friday night.
Backup Geardon Hanohano was the first loaded on a backboard and carted off the field with what Hawaii officials said was a neck injury, but not before flashing the "shaka"- the Hawaiian sign for hang loose. He reportedly complained of numbness.
The second player, starting defensive tackle Siasau Matagiese, was injured on the Warriors' next defensive series. After a lengthy delay, he too was placed on a backboard and carted off. He also managed to signal the crowd with his thumb and little finger.
Also, BYU starting running back Michael Alisa injured his left forearm and will not return.
